Welcome to Nordic Network on

Aquaculture Recirculating Systems

The aims of The Nordic Network on Recirculating Aquaculture Systems are to co-ordinate and strengthen research and development of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) in Nordic countries.

The network is financed by the Nordic Council of Minister (NCM), and was formally founded at a steering committee meeting in April 2011 with country representatives from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland.

Everybody with an interest in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems are very welcome to join the network including interested parties outside the Nordic Countries.

As one of our main activities, we plan to organise a RAS workshop every other year.

The first, very successful workshop was held on October 5-6 this year (2011) in Helsinki, Finland, with 126 participants coming from: Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, the Russian Federation, and the United Kingdom

What are Recirculating Aquaculture Systems?

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are intensive fish and shellfish rearing systems that re-use the water after it has undergone various treatment processes such as mechanical and biological filtration. As a consequence, the discharge of nutrients and organic matter from farms applying RAS technologies is considerably reduced compared to more traditional systems.
